The Finbarr Walsh cumann of the Cork 32 county sovereignty movement today held a remembrance ceremony in memory of I.R.A Oglach Finbarr Walsh. Finbarr was a life long republican who had dedicated his life to the pursuit of Republican ideals which found him incarcerated as a POW and spending periods of his life on the run from Free state forces. A fiercely courageous and dedicated Republican, Finbarr throughout his life never sullied or abandoned the Republican cause, refusing to accept the good Friday surrender he was instrumental in keeping Republicanism in Cork alive. In 2005 Finbarr lost his life in a tragic hit and run accident at the age of 65. Instead of trying to discover the identity of the driver, the free states top detectives were quickly on the scene trying to find out why Finbarr was in the area, which led to extensive searches in the land around the scene. When the perpetrator did hand himself into the gardai a number of days later, no charges were brought against this man. While there are a number of unanswered questions surrounding the night of Finbarr's death and the subsequent weeks, Finbarr's death was a huge loss to the Republican Movement in Cork. In honor of Finbarr, the Cork cumann of the 32 county sovereignty movement is proudly named after Finbarr.
